SMD tweezers: straight, curved or vacuum

In short

SMD work needs at least two pairs of tweezers. Straight ones to place and hold a part precisely on its pad. Curved ones to reach a component or ribbon cable where straight ones won’t fit. A vacuum pen picks up flat chips without squeezing — nothing jumps away or gets scratched. Anti-magnetic stainless steel doesn’t attract tiny parts.

Tweezers are a technician’s second hand. You can’t hold an 0402 resistor or a display ribbon with your fingers, and cheap magnetic tweezers “shoot” parts away and pull them in. So in board repair tweezers deserve as much attention as flux.

Which tweezers for what

TweezersFeaturesBest for
HandsKit ESD-11, straight140 mm, anti-static coating, sharp tight tipsplacing and removing SMD
RELIFE SK-15, curved123 mm, chrome-plated stainless, anti-magnetichard-to-reach spots, ribbons, connectors
FFQ-939, vacuum40 g lift, 3 replaceable tipschips and flat components without clamping

Straight or curved

Straight tweezers are handy when you can see the part from above: pick it up, set it on flux, hold it while you touch it with the tip. The sharp, tightly closing HandsKit tips hold even the smallest components.

Curved tweezers help when your hand blocks the view or the part sits between tall components. The angle lets you hold the tool from the side and still see the pad. They’re also handy for inserting ribbon cables into connectors.

Why a vacuum pen

A vacuum pen doesn’t squeeze a part, it holds it by suction. A flat chip doesn’t slip or jump, and the package isn’t scratched by metal. It’s the easiest way to set a chip on flux straight and level. The FFQ-939 comes with three tips for different part sizes.

Flusenko’s tip. Keep tweezers away from magnets and magnetic mats in the soldering area — even stainless steel can pick up some magnetism. Anti-magnetic tweezers exist precisely so tiny parts don’t stick to the tips.

Where to keep small parts

SMD parts vanish in a second. The cells on the S-120 silicone mat keep them sorted, and silicone withstands a hot tip if you put it down nearby. For short leads and thin wires you’ll want precision cutters.

Tweezers, fluxes and thin solder for fine work are in the “SMD and phones” kit. How to pick flux for SMD — see “RMA-223 or NC-559”.

FAQ

Why anti-static tweezers?

The anti-static coating drains charge so sensitive chips aren’t zapped by static when you pick them up.

Can I solder while holding a part with the vacuum pen?

Yes: set the part on flux, hold it with the tip and tack one lead with the iron. Then remove the pen and solder the rest.

How do I avoid losing SMD parts?

Work on a light mat with cells and grip parts firmly but gently: squeezing too hard shoots them out of the tweezers.
