What to buy for soldering first — and what can wait

Buy soldering gear in stages. Start: an adjustable iron, flux paste, 1 mm solder and tip-cleaning wool — all in the “First solder” kit. Soldering regularly: add a mat, a stand, a desoldering pump and thin 0.8 mm solder. Repair shop: a 120 W digital iron, no-clean fluxes and tweezers — “Workshop PRO”.
A beginner’s most expensive mistake is buying everything at once and never using half of it. The second is buying the cheapest iron with no temperature control and deciding soldering “isn’t for you”. Here’s the order in which you’ll actually need tools.
Stage 1. First soldering
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| 60 W 8-in-1 kit | adjustable iron, 5 tips, solder and a stand in one box |
| Flux paste with a plunger | solder won’t flow without flux |
| Lefavor 63/37 solder, 1 mm | all-round, flux-cored |
| Tip-cleaning wool | clean tip without a wet sponge |
That’s enough for wires, connectors, headphones, LED strips and your first boards. How to solder — see the step-by-step guide.
Stage 2. Soldering regularly
| What | When you’ll need it |
|---|---|
| S-120 silicone mat | solder drops on the desk, small parts get lost |
| Coil stand with sponge | the iron lies wherever it lands |
| Pro’sKit desoldering pump | you need to remove a part or fix a joint |
| 0.8 mm solder | small parts, dense boards |
Stage 3. Board repair and service
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Digital 120 W iron | precise 200–600 °C and power to spare |
| NC-223 and NC-559 flux | no-clean for SMD, reballing and traces |
| Curved and vacuum tweezers | small components and chips |
| 45×30 magnetic mat | taking devices apart without losing screws |
Flusenko’s tip. Don’t skimp on the iron and flux — they’re 80 % of the result. A mat, stand and tweezers can come later when the bench gets crowded. A poor iron with no temperature control will ruin even the best flux.
Ready-made kits instead of a list
We’ve turned these stages into master’s kits: a kit costs just the sum of the items in stock right now, and everything goes into the cart in one click. Items temporarily out of stock are greyed out and aren’t added.
- “First solder” — stage 1;
- “Workbench” and “Desoldering” — stage 2;
- “SMD and phones” and “Workshop PRO” — stage 3.
FAQ
Where to start on a tight budget?
With an adjustable iron, flux and 1 mm solder. At first a ceramic tile and the metal stand from the kit can stand in for a mat and a separate stand.
Does a beginner need a desoldering pump?
Not from day one. You’ll want it when you need to fix a joint or remove a part — usually after a few weeks of practice.
Can I put together my own kit?
Yes. Message the master on Telegram with what you solder — we’ll suggest what to take from stock.
