How to desolder a part: pump or copper braid

To remove a part without lifting a trace, take the solder off first and only then pull the part. For through-hole parts and connectors use a desoldering pump: melt, press the button, and the solder is in the chamber. For SMD and flat pads use copper braid, which soaks up solder. Fresh flux helps in both cases.
The most common desoldering mistake is heating and pulling a part while there’s still solder on it. The pad tears off with the lead and the repair gets harder. The right order: free the leads from solder and the part comes out on its own.
Pump or braid
| Tool | How it works | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Pro’sKit pump | vacuum pump sucks up molten solder; comes apart for cleaning | through-hole parts, connectors, board holes |
| Flusenko, lightweight | aluminium body, 49 g, nozzle with a 2.5 mm hole | precise work, a second tool on the bench |
| Wick CP-2515 braid | 2.5 mm copper braid soaks up solder | SMD, flat pads, leftover tin |
Using a desoldering pump
- Push the plunger down until it locks.
- Add a little flux and melt the solder on the lead with the iron.
- Bring the nozzle right up to the molten solder and press the button — the pump sucks the metal in.
- If solder is left in the hole, repeat with a drop of flux.
- Take the pump apart and clean it now and then: set solder inside reduces suction.
The nozzle wears out first — there’s a replacement nozzle for Pro’sKit, so you don’t need a new tool.
Using braid
- Cut off the used end: braid full of solder won’t soak up any more.
- Add flux to the pad — the braid works faster.
- Lay the braid on the solder and press it with the hot tip for 1–2 seconds.
- Lift the tip and braid together; don’t drag the braid across the board.
Flusenko’s tip. Before desoldering, add a little fresh solder to the old joint. It sounds odd, but fresh metal with flux conducts heat better and “wakes up” the old joint, so it comes off in one pass.
Flux for desoldering
Fresh flux is half the job: old solder is often oxidised and melts reluctantly. For SMD and reballing, the DSUNYK NC-223-ASM gel stays on the pads and needs no cleaning. Afterwards wipe the tip in brass wool — a lot of old tin ends up on it.
Everything for desoldering is together in the “Desoldering” kit.
FAQ
The pump has weak suction — what now?
Take it apart and clean it: set solder builds up inside. Check the nozzle — if it’s melted or widened, replace it.
Why won’t the braid soak up solder?
Not enough heat or flux. Use a clean section, add flux and press with enough tip contact area.
Can I remove a chip with just an iron?
Small SMD parts with two or three leads — yes, with braid and flux. Large chips with many pins are usually removed with hot air.
