Your soldering bench: mat, stand and an orderly desk

In short

A soldering workspace means a heat-resistant surface, a sturdy iron stand and a place to clean the tip. A silicone mat withstands up to +500 °C and has cells for parts: the S-120, 34×23 cm for most repairs, the 45×30 cm magnetic mat when there are lots of small metal bits on the bench. A coil stand with a sponge keeps a hot iron from rolling away.

A burnt desk, a lost screw and an iron dropped on a wire are first-workshop classics. Three inexpensive things solve all of that and make soldering calmer and safer.

Mat: which size

MatSize and thicknessFeatures
S-50930×20 cm, 1.3 mm7 cells, compact for small repairs
S-12034×23 cm, 3 mmcells, flexible, washable
Magnetic45×30 cmmagnetic zones hold screws and tools, cells

All three mats are silicone and handle up to +500 °C: molten solder, hot glue and a hot tip won’t hurt them, and set solder peels right off. A thicker mat (3 mm) protects better against scratches and doesn’t slide; a thin one rolls up easily to take along.

Iron stand

The iron sits hot for most of the job. The coil stand shields the tip inside and stands on a stable base, with the included sponge at hand for cleaning. Short on space? The compact slingshot stand made of 2 mm metal will do.

Cleaning the tip

A wet sponge shock-cools the tip, while brass wool in the YATO holder cleans it dry: tin and flux stay inside, not on the desk. Why tips turn black and how to save them — see “Why a soldering tip blackens”.

Flusenko’s tip. Put the stand on the side you hold the iron, and the tip cleaner right next to it. The shorter your hand’s path, the less often the iron ends up on the desk “just for a second”.

Also handy

  • a digital caliper — measure wire, hole or part size to 0.1 mm;
  • good light and ventilation — don’t breathe flux smoke;
  • a small box for lead trimmings and used braid.

Mat, stand, tip wool and caliper together — in the “Workbench” kit.

FAQ

Can I put a hot iron on a silicone mat?

Briefly, yes — silicone handles up to +500 °C. But the iron should normally rest on its stand so it doesn’t roll or touch wires.

How do I clean a silicone mat?

With warm water and detergent. Set solder and glue come off silicone if you flex the mat a little.

What are the magnetic zones for?

So screws, washers and metal tools don’t roll away when you take devices apart. Keep tweezers and tiny SMD parts away from the magnets.
